The Grants Section at the Idaho Department of Juvenile Corrections supports the Idaho Juvenile Justice Commission in their efforts to help Idaho strengthen youth and families. The Grants Section can provide you with assistance to develop effective programming for youth in your community. The Grants Section can assist with:
- referrals to potential funding sources,
- technical grant-writing assistance,
- programming guidance, and
- links to best practices and evidence-based approaches.
The Grants Section also oversees community-based programs including the Community Incentive Program, the Mental Health Program, and the Re-Entry Program. These programs provide resources to address the specific needs of juvenile offenders while remaining in their home communities.
Together, we can prevent and reduce juvenile crime in Idaho.
The state of Idaho provides funding to the counties to assist them in meeting their responsibilities under the Idaho Juvenile Corrections Act. The act is based upon the following principles: accountability, competency development and community protection for juveniles who come under the purview of this act. Counties provide supervision of juvenile offenders, as well as secure detention and community-based programming. District Liaisons with the Idaho Department of Juvenile Corrections (Department) assist the counties with the utilization and reporting of these funds.
State funding the counties receive are derived from state dedicated tax and general funds and are distributed on a quarterly basis. These funds can only be used for juvenile services and cannot be used to supplant existing county funding. The funding sources are:
Juvenile Correction Act Funds – are general fund dollars and are distributed quarterly by the Department based upon the percentage of 10- to 17-year-olds in that county as compared to the counties in the rest of the state.
Tobacco Tax Funds – are dedicated tax dollars that are passed on to the counties through the Department. These funds are distributed quarterly based upon the county population as a whole compared to the rest of the state. Authorization of these funds can be located in Idaho Code §63-2552(a) and §63-2506.
Lottery Funds – are dedicated tax dollars that are distributed directly to the counties. These funds are distributed quarterly based upon the county population as a whole compared to the rest of the state. Authorization of these funds can be located in Idaho Code §63-3035A and §63-3067.
Counties provide annual reporting of financial and statistical data to the District Liaisons. These reports are due to the state November 15th and December 1st of each year.
